Katie Thies-Purvis

MS, LPC, Expressive Arts Therapist, Practice Owner, Supervisor

Hi, I am Katie, the owner of Scottsdale Counseling and Art Therapy and a Licensed Professional Counselor. I have a passion for helping create a safe and non-judgmental space for clients to explore their experiences and emotions. My extensive training in trauma-informed therapy allows me to guide you through the healing process, helping you develop effective coping strategies and fostering resilience. Whether you've experienced a traumatic event or struggle with the day-to-day stresses of life, I am committed to supporting you on your journey towards lasting change and well-being.

I use a collaborative and client-centered approach. I combine evidence-based therapeutic approaches, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy and positive psychology with experiential therapies including Expressive Art Therapy, Trauma Informed Yoga and Mindfulness with a warm and empathetic style to create a transformative counseling experience. I am also trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing Therapy), an integrative psychotherapy approach that has been extensively researched and proven effective for the treatment of trauma and adverse life experiences. Through this technique, I support clients in working through their trauma and pain so they can once again be present in their own lives and the lives of the people they love. I am also trained in the Daring Way™ a method of shame reduction based on the research of Brené Brown.

I believe therapy is a uniquely human profession. The relationship between a client and therapist provides a sacred opportunity for learning, healing, and practicing new healthy behaviors. While I believe everyone can benefit from therapy, it is also important to find the right fit in a therapist.

I have worked in the mental health field since 2011. I often tell others that the work I do chose me. After years of healing from my own trauma, my mission is to serve and give back through my work and to be an advocate for Expressive Art Therapy and Counseling. I value connection, compassion and creativity. Creativity is incredibly healing and when we bring our creative ideas to life, we give birth to our own unique stories.

Outside of work I enjoy spending time with my family, traveling, playing board games and being creative. I am a super fan of The Amazing Race and would love to race around the World one day.

Hello and welcome! My name is Lisa. I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, Licensed Associate Substance Abuse Counselor and Clinical Art Therapist. It is my belief that one of the bravest things that you can do is to explore and understand your own story. I will work alongside you, not to solve your problems, but to create a safe space where answers can emerge through therapeutic collaboration. My hope is to help you support yourself in aligning with your true self to live a more meaningful and fulfilling life.

My career has spanned over a decade with a dedication to the field of addiction and mental health disorders. I have experience working at a Therapeutic Day School, Inpatient Hospitalization programs, Partial Hospitalization Programs and Intensive Outpatient Programs, where I offered integrated care for Substance Use Disorders, Eating Disorders, Complex Trauma, and Mood Disorders as a treatment coordinator, primary therapist, and group therapist for teens, young adults and adults. My style is interactive, yet at the same time allowing for space to explore personal experiences without judgment. Our first meeting together will be collaborative, client-centered and comprehensive. We will explore your personal goals, challenges, and expectations. I use evidence-based techniques such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) , Psychodynamic Therapy, Structural Family Therapy, Somatic Experiencing/Sensorimotor Therapy and Clinical Art Therapy. Progress is tracked through regular assessments and feedback sessions, adjusting strategies as needed to ensure continuous growth. Homework assignments may be provided to reinforce learning and promote self-reflection between sessions.

I am also knowledgeable in the 12-Steps of recovery and can provide support for you and/or family members along your journey. I have a personal experience with recovery, which I sought in 2013. This has enabled me to have unique perspective on the feelings of powerlessness within the family unit as well as individually. I understand the challenges of seeking help and the importance of honesty with oneself. My specialized skill set combines a deep understanding of the disease model of addiction with a genuine desire to assist those struggling to cope with life's stressors and challenges. Along with being a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist and a License Associate Substance Abuse Counselor, I am a Registered Clinical Art Therapist (ATR) and help others broaden their awareness though clinical art therapy techniques, to aid in personal insight and healing when it may be hard to find the words. Art is a passion of mine as well, and I find there is a great sense of self-discovery in the process. It is my goal to develop a safe, accepting, and supportive therapeutic relationship that provides you the foundation for change.

When I'm not in the office I enjoy spending time with my friends hiking, playing tennis or pickle ball or spontaneously going for an adventure in nature. At home you can find me spoiling my two Persian cats, Rocky and Jasmine, which I am always happy to share pictures of. Just ask! Thank you for taking time in reading my profile. You are not alone, and you do not have to heal alone.

"May today there be peace within. May you trust that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith in yourself and others. May you use the gifts that you have received and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be content with yourself just the way you are. Let this knowledge settle into your bones, and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise, and love. It is there for each and every one of us."
