  • Expressive Arts Therapy & Art Therapy

    Expressive Arts Therapy is a multimodal approach to therapy that draws on the creative arts. It encapsulates both the therapeutic act of engaging in creativity as well as the use of arts as psychotherapy. The creative arts can be a non-verbal form of expression that can aid in our understating of our experiences and the world around us. Expressive arts can be utilized both as a form of expression and as healing. Expressive arts therapy draws from many art techniques including painting, clay work, dancing and movement, journal writing, sculpture, psychodrama, music, collage, drawing, photography, film making, poetry, and more.


    Expressive Arts Therapy is often used alongside other modalities such as psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, or mindful-based approaches. It is a form of therapy for both children and adults and can be used to treat most mental health related conditions. No prior background, skill or experience in art is needed to engage in expressive art therapy. 


    Scottsdale Counseling and Art Therapy offers both Expressive Art Therapy and Clinical Art Therapy. Our clinicians utilizes elements of both as it best suits the needs for a particular client. Art Therapy provides a deeper understanding of the clinical and prescriptive uses of specific visual arts media. The American Art Therapy Association describes, “Art therapy is used to improve cognitive and sensorimotor functions, foster self-esteem and self-awareness, cultivate emotional resilience, promote insight, enhance social skills, reduce and resolve conflicts and distress, and advance societal and ecological change.

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing)

    Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy is an evidence-based therapy intervention that allows induvial to process traumatic and adverse experiences quickly, often resolving issues more quickly that other therapies alone. EMDR is most effective when used in conjunction with other traditional methods of therapy. EMDR therapy uses bilateral stimulation and guided processing to help clients replace their anxieties and fears with positive images, emotions, and thoughts. EMDR therapy helps children and adults of all ages and can be used to address a wide range of challenges.

    The Daring Way™ is a highly experiential methodology based on the research of Dr. Brené Brown. The method was designed for work with individuals, couples, families, work teams, and organizational leaders. It can be facilitated in clinical, educational, and professional settings. 

     

    The Daring Way curriculum explores topics such as vulnerability, courage, shame, and worthiness. Through this work you will examine the thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that are holding you back and identify new choices and practices that will move you toward more authentic and wholehearted living. The primary focus is on developing shame resilience skills and developing daily practices that transform the way we live, love, parent, and lead.

    Directions/ Parking

    Scottsdale Counseling and Art Therapy is located in Suite 124 at 16421 North Tatum Boulevard. We are in the north building, Building 100. Parking is available in the open lot off Tatum Blvd and behind the Building 100. The entrance to Suite 124, Scottsdale Counseling and Art Therapy, is located near the south door of the building.

  • What are your rates?

    50 minute session: $185

    100 minute session: $370

  • What forms of payment do you accept?

    All major credit cards are accepted and most HSA cards. For your convenience, a “Credit Card on File” form is provided in the Client Portal once you request an appointment.

  • Do you accept insurance?

    Scottsdale Counseling and Art Therapy does NOT accept insurance. We are considered an Out Of Network (OON) provider. You may request a Super Bill at the time of service to submit to your insurance company for out of network services. Please contact your insurance directly for information regarding your eligibility and reimbursement rates. Please be aware that a mental health diagnosis is often required to be provided to your insurance company if you utilize this option.

  • How is EMDR therapy different from other therapies?

    EMDR therapy does not require talking in detail about the distressing issue or completing homework between sessions. 


    EMDR therapy allows the brain to resume its natural healing process. EMDR therapy is designed to resolve unprocessed traumatic memories in the brain. For many clients, EMDR therapy can be completed in fewer sessions than other psychotherapies. (EMDRIA.org

  • Do I need to be "artistic" to engage in art therapy?

    No prior background, skill or experience in art is needed to engage in art and expressive arts therapy.

  • Do you offer telehealth?

    Virtual Telehealth sessions are available for clients aged 16+. Clients under the age of 16 will be assessed for the appropriateness of Telehealth services on a case-by-case basis.

  • What is the cancellation policy?

    Cancellations must be made 48 hours before your scheduled appointment. Not showing up for a scheduled appointment or cancellations not made prior to the requested time will result in a full session charge.

  • What are the benefits of private pay?

    The benefits of private pay are numerous, with the primary benefits being a greater level of privacy and control over your treatment. When a therapy session is billed through insurance they often require detailed documentation about your mental health including a diagnosis and updates regarding your progress. Some clients we meet with do not meet criteria for a mental health diagnosis and some would prefer to have the details of their mental health treatment separate from their insurance records.
